An expanding pipe stopper comprising a pair of coaxial plates (102, 103, fig.20) with an outwardly expandable flexible seal (104, fig. 20) between them, and a positioning mechanism (109, fig. 1) which maintains the plates in a first position where the seal is radially unexpanded, and a second position where the seal is expanded. The positioning mechanism has a mechanism for moving the plates between the first and second positions, the mechanism comprising an actuating member (108, fig.1) connected to a handle 1603 by a hinging mechanism (1702, fig.17a). The handle may be telescopically foldable, and the hinge may be prevented from opening past a predetermined angle so that the seal can be lowered below ground level and positioned in a pipe using the handle. Preferably, the actuating member comprises a cam member (111, fig. 1). Also claimed is a remote installation device for an expanding pipe stopper. |
