The present disclosure relates to a vaccine comprising a biologically effec tive dosage amount of a protein- or peptide-cochleate, wherein said protein- or peptide-cochleate comprises the following component s: a) a protein or peptide component to which an immune response is elicited, b) a negatively charged lipid component, and c) a diva lent cation component. The present invention also provid es a method of immunizing a host, comprising administering a biologically effecti ve amount of the above-described protein- or peptide-coc hleate. Advantageously, the vaccine can be administered orally.
