A cylinder block comprises separate cast parts 10, 11 Fig. 1 having meeting faces in a plane 3-3 containing the cylinder axes wherein the parts have grooves 20, 30, 33 covered by a liner 35 Fig. 2c to form at least one channel for cooling liquid, the lower channels 30 of adjacent cylinders being interconnected. Oil from duct 22 (Fig. 2b) passes between adjacent cylinders through ducts 21, 31 and from ducts 20 along the helical grooves 33 and out through a draining duct 32.
