PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal additive which is suitable for a liquid crystal device equipped with a vertical alignment film composed of inorganic materials and, when added to a liquid crystal composition, enhances stability with time and thermal stability of the alignment of the liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal additive is designed to be added to a liquid crystal composition, which is applied to the liquid crystal device equipped with the vertical alignment film composed of inorganic materials and has a negative dielectric anisotropy, and comprises a liquid crystal-analogous compound bearing a fluorine-substituting group on its side chain and a polar group capable of forming a hydrogen bond as one end group.
