PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for keeping the safety of passengers on steps and smoothly operating the flow of passengers at a doorway even when the congestion of the passengers occurs by stagnation at the doorway of a passenger conveyor. SOLUTION: In the passenger conveyor device circulatingly moving the endlessly connected steps, load detectors 4a and 4b detecting the loads of the passengers and cargos are installed on the floor surface of the doorway of the passenger conveyor. When the detected values of the load detectors 4a and 4b exceed set load ranges or the detected values are lower than the set load ranges, the passenger conveyor is operated at a moderate decelerating mode or stopped. After the detected values reach within the set load ranges, the operation of the conveyor is moved from the moderate deceleration mode to a normal mode. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
