Disclosed is a method that makes it possible to operate a subarea (30, 32) of a cooking hob, which comprises several partial elements (30a, 30b, 30c, 32a, 32b, 32c, 32d, 32e, 32f, 32g), at a freely selectable power, said power being evenly distributed across the entire subarea, even when the heating elements (30a, 30b, 30c, 32a, 32b, 32c, 32d, 32e, 32f, 32g) are able to release only power with discrete power stages. According to the inventive method, some heating elements are operated at maximum power while one heating element is operated in a clocked mode if possible and the remaining heating elements remain without power.
