The present invention provides a process for enhancing the metal contaminant sorption capacity of mineral compounds within a groundwater-bearing formatio n by manipulating the pH and the surface acidity of the mineral compounds. The process is useful in removing metal contaminants from groundwater within a groundwater-bearing formation, providing a backstop treatment for groundwate r after previous water treatment, and for protection of water sources, for example well-head protection.
