The method involves adjusting operating parameters of an internal combustion engine to increase exhaust gas temperature. Fuel is injected into the upstream of an exhaust gas system (12) of a particulate filter (16) when the gas or filter temperature reach 400 degree Celsius. The fuel and its HC-portions are oxidized on oxidation catalyst of the filter to heat the filter to 600 degree Celsius for burning the soot directly on the filter.
