SEAT BELT RETRACTOR

A seat belt retractor comprising: a spool (1) mounted for rotation on the retractor, for retraction or pay-out of seat-belt webbing (11) depending upon the rotation direction of the spool (1); means (13a, 13b) for locking the spool against rotation when a crash is sensed; force limiting means (2, 8) for allowing further pay-out of the seat belt webbing (11) after the spool (1) has locked, under the influence of a vehicle occupant's forward momentum. The force limiting means comprises a first resilient means (2) disposed in the force path between the spool (1) and the locking means, and a second resilient means comprising a wire (8) releasably held in the force path between the spool (1) and the locking means by a locking plate (6) engaged with the locking means, wherein the wire is released from the force path by disengagement between the locking plate (6) and the locking means (13a, 13b).
