<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new catalyst for manufacturing synthesis gas, which can remarkably reduce the dimensions of a reaction facility and improve the energy efficiency of the reaction facility, and to provide a method for manufacturing synthesis gas by using this catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The catalyst for manufacturing synthesis gas has a carrier and a Group VIII metal carried by the carrier. The carrier contains a first ingredient, a second ingredient and a third ingredient. The first ingredient is an oxide of at least one alkaline-earth metal selected from the group of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and Barium (Ba). The second ingredient is an oxide of at least one element selected from the group of scandium (Sc), yttrium (Y) and lanthanoids.
