A process for pressing glass optical elements, comprises heating a glass member (2) in a forming unit (1), to a temperature above its transformation temperature, then pressing the member and cooling it to below the transformation temperature. Cooling takes place over two stages, the second of which includes the transition temperature. Active cooling is used to control the cooling stages. The forming unit contains a stamper (3,3'), a guide ring (8) and a cooling section (9).
