<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly and simply extract an area boundary, when performing area division of an image or extracting an important subject area. <P>SOLUTION: For every pixel, horizontal edge information a (i, j), vertical edge information b (i, j), upward-sloping oblique edge information c (i, j) and downward-sloping oblique edge information d (i, j) concerning a signal value difference between adjacent pixels are calculated.
