PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device that is compact and has a high light use rate by using many light emitting diodes as a light source and to provide a projection type display device that uses the light source device and is highly efficient. SOLUTION: Light emitting diodes 101, 102, and 103 for emitting R, G, and B color light rays are disposed so that their optical axes form a U-shape relative to the polarizing separation face 111 of a polarizing beam splitter 110. 1/4 wavelength plates 104, 105, and 106 and dichroic mirrors 107, 108, and 109 are disposed between the corresponding light emitting diodes and the polarizing beam splitter 110. Thus, almost all the luminous flux of random polarization components emitted from the corresponding light emitting diodes are emitted from the light source device 100 as P-polarized light rays and S-polarized light rays.
