PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a nitrile from a carboxylic acid amide in high yield and in good operability. SOLUTION: The method for producing the nitrile comprises carrying out a reaction of the carboxylic acid amide with a dehydrating agent such as phosgene, phosphorus oxychloride or thionyl chloride in a solvent consisting of an aliphatic or alicyclic nitrile separable from water such as isobutyronitrile. In this method, the reaction may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as an N,N-disubstituted amide, nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compound or tertiary amine.
