PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover deleted data by an easy operation in a data recording and reproducing device. SOLUTION: A hard disk 120 includes a video recording area 122, an index data storage area 123 for storing index data of each of file data recorded in the video recording area 122, and a back-up data storage area 124. Each of the file data in the video recording area 122 is reproduced on the basis of the index data in the index data storage area 123. When the operation for deleting the certain file data in the video recording area 122 is carried out, the index data corresponding to the certain file data are moved to the back-up data storage area 124 from the index data storage area 123. On the other hand, when the operation for recovering the certain file data is carried out, the index data corresponding to the certain file data are moved to the index data storage area 123 from the back-up data storage area 124.
