The torque wrench (1) has a wrench head (2) and a hand grip (4). A housing (5) at the wrench head has a friction clutch (8) to transmit the torque to an integrated rotor (6). The clutch is tensed by an elastic element (9). A signal unit (36) with an optical display (46) indicates when a preset tightening moment has been achieved, using a micro-switch (38) which monitors clutch slip. A battery (51) within the hand grip provides the power supply for the signal unit.
