Oxacycloalkan-2-ones and oxacycloalken-2-ones (IA) are new. Oxacycloalkan-2-ones and oxacycloalken-2-ones (IA) of formula (I), with specified exceptions, are new; dotted line = optional additional bond; X, Y = methylene or 2-12 carbon (C) polymethylene, optionally with another methyl (Me) substituent; A = hydrogen (H) or Me in unsaturated compounds and Me in saturated compounds; in unsaturated compounds, over 80% is in the cis-form if A = H; and over 50% is in the cis-form if A = Me. The exceptions to (IA) are Z-oxacyclopentadec-3- (or 6- or 13-)en-2-one, Z-oxacyclohexadec-3- (or 6-, 11-, 12- or 13-)en-2-one and Z-oxacycloheptadec-8- (or 10-, 11-, 12-, 13- or 15-)en-2-one. Independent claims are also included for: (a) perfume compositions containing compounds of formula (I) including the exceptions but excluding Z-oxacyclopentadec-6-en-2-one (15-membered ring) and Z-oxacyclopentadec-8- or -11-en-2-one (17-membered ring); (b) the preparation of (I); and (c) the preparation of alkenoic acids (II) used as starting materials for (I). |
