PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of restraining power consumption, as much as possible, while improving an AF/zoom function by utilizing distance information, and to provide its control method and a program. SOLUTION: When an operator turns on a main power source, power is supplied not only to the imaging apparatus, but also to an external range-finding unit (step S1). Thus, the external range-finding unit acquires subject distance information. If a focusing operation mode is an MF mode, in which the subject distance information is not required, a signal to a power source control circuit is turned off, so that power supply to the external range-finding unit is cut off (steps S2→S5). Meanwhile, immediately after MF has been switched to AF, in a state where the focusing operation mode is an AF mode, the signal to the power source control circuit is turned on, the power is supplied to the external range-finding unit and the subject distance information can be acquired (steps S2→S3→S4).
