PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bridge for realizing a SONET which provides LAN connection between LAN service ports each for imparting a data path protection function. SOLUTION: Each LAN service port (LSP) is connected to two Ethernet(R) switch ports (ESP) of separate Ethernet(R) switches to constitute a three-port LAN bridge comprised of the LSP and the two ESPs. The bridge is redundant, and each LSP is connected over separate SONET connections to the ESP of a separate Ethernet(R) switch. Because the LAN bridge is redundant, the two Ethernet(R) switches initially are available to provide connections for the two redundant paths. The Ethernet(R) switches employ spanning tree protocol to make one only switch active and to therefore disable one of the redundant paths created by the LAN bridge. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
