PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording and reproducing device by which a mode having high possibility of being demanded by a user at the point of time of a reproduction instruction is automatically selected without being conscious of whether the present mode is a moving picture mode or a reproduction mode. SOLUTION: An image input section 0101 is an inlet for fetching an image by the image recording and reproducing device and inputs a moving picture. An image output section 0102 is an outlet for outputting the image by the image recording and reproducing device. Generally, its output is displayed on a display device so that the user can visually recognize the output. A switch 0103 is a selection switch for switching recording and reproduction. A switch 0104 is connected to the side A in a moving picture recording mode and to the side B in a still picture recording mode. A switch 0105 is connected to the side A in a moving picture reproduction mode and to the side B in a still picture reproduction mode.
