PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range finder for a camera or the like, the range finder that can reduce range-finding errors at the range-finding of an edge part, and that can perform high accuracy range finding. SOLUTION: This range finder is a passive-type range finder that performs range-finding of an object, on the basis of the principle of trigonometrical distance measuring principle, based on the output signal of luminance distribution by line sensors 2a, 2b. An object image formed on the line sensor by a light-receiving lens is photoelectrically converted, with the object image signal further A/D converted by an A/D conversion circuit 4 as sensor data. The sensor data is divided into a plurality of range-finding areas, respectively, with decision made on whether the sensor data in each range-finding area is an edge pattern. For the range-finding area decided as the edge pattern, the range-finding area is reset in two kinds, in which the range-finding area is expanded by extending to each of the left and right ends of the range-finding area region.
