The invention relates to the cosmetic use of a compound that can act on the metabolic pathway of DOPAchrome tautomerase (TRP-2) as a protective agent for hair follicle melanocytes and to the use thereof, for example, to combat canities. The invention also relates to specific cosmetic compositions which are used to combat canities and which comprise at least one compound that can act on the metabolic pathway of DOPAchrome tautomerase (TRP-2) in a cosmetically-acceptable medium, and to the uses thereof. The invention also relates to a method of treating canities and to a method of preserving the natural pigmentation of grey or white hair and/or hairs with the application of a cosmetic composition comprising at least one compound that can act on the metabolic pathway of DOPAchrome tautomerase. The invention further relates to a method of identifying a compound that can act on the metabolic pathway of DOPAchrome tautomerase (TRP-2) and a method of evaluating the cytoprotective activity thereof.
