Cleaning of the polymer melt guiding components of a sheet extruder to allow the charge to be changed comprises periodic variation of the speed of flow through these components. Independent claims are included for: (a) a control and operating unit for carrying out the process in which cleaning as described is automatically carried out; (b) a sheet extrusion system comprising an extruder and the control and operating unit; and (c) sheet produced using the cleaning process.
