PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an adhesive layer in a polarization separation element such as a polarization beam splitter from being deteriorated due to transmission of luminous flux, and to prevent the degradation of optical characteristics which is caused by the transmission of the luminous flux through the adhesive layer, in a color separation/synthesis optical system. SOLUTION: Blue component light does not pass through an adhesive layer 2b in a first polarization beam splitter 2 but is reflected by a polarization separation film 2a. Then, the blue component light does not pass through the adhesive layer 7b in a third polarization beam splitter 7 but is reflected by a polarization separation film 7a and is made incident on a reflection type spatial optical modulation element 8 for blue.
