PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner in which a plane to be scanned is scanned with a light beam at a high speed and to provide an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The light beam from a laser light source 62 is made incident onto a deflection mirror face 651 from a swinging axis direction (subscanning direction Y) with an acute angle γ with respect to the normal line NL of the deflection mirror face 651, and a plane is scanned with the light beam in a main scanning direction X. In this way, the light beam is made incident onto the deflection mirror face 651 along the swinging axis direction, thus the length of a movable plate 653 in the main scanning direction X is made comparatively short. Further, the light beam which is made incident onto the deflection mirror face 651 with a first optical system 63 is shaped into a slender cross section shape extending in the main scanning direction X, and the movable plate 653 is shaped into a slender form extending along the main scanning direction X.
