Natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, regenerated cellulose, polyesters and nylon, and textiles produced from or containing these fibres, and crude wood pulp, are bleached with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a peroxide compound which splits off active oxygen, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide and salts of perboric, percarbonic and perphosphoric acids, in the presence of a water-soluble silicic acid ester. The silicic acid ester is preferably an alkoxy silane, e.g. tetrakis (2-methoxyethoxy)-silane. The aqueous solution or dispersion may also contain alkali or alkaline earth metal salts, e.g. Epsom salt. The treatment is preferably carried out in an alkaline medium, buffering salts, e.g. phosphates, being used for adjusting the pH value, at temperatures higher than 60 DEG C. |
