PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a hop-up phenomenon from appearing when recovering a vehicle height, while displaying a prescribed shock absorber function since a hydraulic shock absorber is mounted on a vehicle and enabling lowering of the vehicle height. SOLUTION: This hydraulic shock absorber comprises a shock absorber main body contracting by supplying hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic fluid feed discharge source P into a cylinder 1 via a through-hole 2a punched in a piston rod 2 and elongating by returning the supplied hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic fluid feed discharge source P via the through-hole 2a. The hydraulic shock absorber has a selector valve having a poppet 4 for allowing communication between the hydraulic fluid feed discharge source P and the inside of the cylinder 1 when the shock absorber main body is slidably stored in a storing chamber 2b communicated with the through-hole 2a and enlarged in diameter and the poppet 4 is in advancing state and interrupting the communication between the hydraulic fluid feed discharge source P and the inside of the cylinder 1. When the poppet 4 in the selector valve is transferred from the advancing state to the retreating state, flow velocity of hydraulic fluid flowing from the inside of the cylinder 1 toward the hydraulic fluid feed discharge source P is slowed down.
