PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of adjusting sheet feeding pressure between a pickup roller and paper and adjusting an effect of separating the fed paper with a simple structure for conveying the paper in an appropriate condition. SOLUTION: The paper feeder comprises a tray 1 for loading and containing the paper, the pickup roller 2 positioned beyond the tray 1 for feeding the paper P loaded on the tray 1, a paper separating part 3 positioned on a route for feeding the paper P fed by the pickup roller 2 and equipped with a slope 3a with its height increased to the downstream side in the feeding direction of the paper P, and a control means for operating a tray lifting means so as to raise or lower the position of the tray 1 from a reference position in accordance with a loading amount of the paper P loaded on the tray based on detected information of a conveyance condition detecting means 200 for detecting a conveyance condition of the paper P fed by the pickup roller 2.
