The invention relates to a method for detection and prevention of illicit use of specific network protocols without alteration of legitimate use thereof. According to the invention, each new flow is allocated a counter CPT (27). On receipt of each packet of data, a delay function (25) is applied to reduce the flow of illicit data without affecting the legitimate usage. The delay function is increased, particularly, as a function of the rate of the flow for monitoring using the counter CPT.
