PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for estimating TEWL values or a skin barrier function on the basis of the shape of cells of a horny layer etc. and to thereby provide a technique for selecting cosmetics suitable for individuals. SOLUTION: In this method for differentiating a skin barrier function, a Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is estimated on the basis of the shape and/or a distribution of cells of a collected horny layer. With this as an index, the skin barrier function is differentiated. The shape of the cells of the collected horny layer preferably has an average area of cells of a horny cell layer, and the distribution of the shape of the cells of the collected horny layer preferably has area uniformity.
