PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for embossing in which an engraved roll and a backing roll are light in weight and an uneven pattern can be easily worked, which can be applied to various types of paper qualities and exhibits an excellent design effect of products and a production cost, and an embossed paper prepared by the method. SOLUTION: In the method for embossing to form an uneven pattern on a sheet-like substrate with the engraved roll and the backing roll, the engraved roll and the backing roll are both elastic rolls with the uneven patterns of the rolls being in a male and female relation, and a paper having a water content of 6 mass% or more is used as the sheet-like substrate.
