MODIFYING METHOD OF BIOMASS AND MODIFIED BIOMASS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified biomass convertible into a high-concentration biomass aqueous slurry which can be used as a substitute fuel for fuel oil starting from a cellulose biomass as a raw material which has not been fully exploited heretofore.

SOLUTION: The modifying method of biomass comprises a modification step for modifying the cellulose biomass having an oxygen/carbon atomic ratio of at least 0.5 to lower the oxygen-carbon atomic ratio of the biomass to at most 0.38 in the presence of water at a pressure of not lower than the saturated vapor pressure, and a separation step for separating the modification reaction products obtained by the modification step into a solid component and a liquid component. The modified biomass is obtained by the modification treatment by the method. A gasification method comprises gasifying the modified biomass in the presence of oxygen of 25-40% of the oxygen amount required for perfect combustion and a necessary amount of steam at a gasification temperature of 800-1,300°C and a gasification pressure of 0.1-10 MPa.
