PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum type washing machine capable of further reducing vibration at the start of rotation of a drum and the nose accompanying the vibration. SOLUTION: The value of moment of inertia, equivalent to the mass of the whole drum including the weight (the quantity of load) of the wet laundry stored in the drum, is calculated when the rotation speed of the drum is raised to 100 rpm and the drum is rotated at a speed of 100 rpm, and various threshold values for determining whether the rotation speed of the drum should be raised from 100 rpm or not are set by using the value of moment of inertia. The value of moment of inertia calculated when the drum is rotated at a speed of 100 rpm is stored in the RAM in a control part, and is used when the rotation speed of the drum is raised to 100 rpm thereafter.
