PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To self-determine the situation of dust deposited on a light receiving part, and make light emitted from the light emitting part receivable by a light receiving part before starting operation. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a carrying means 26 to carry paper P, a detection sensor comprising the light emitting part 28 and the light receiving part 29 to receive the light emitted from the light emitting part 28 for optically detecting the paper P carried by the carrying means 26, a control device 39 to control light emission intensity of the light emitting part 28 of the detection sensor to be lower than a normal level, and a display 37 to display when the light cannot be received by the light receiving part 29 due to lowering of the light emitting intention of the light emitting part 29 by the control device 39.
