<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit wherein a backlight quantity can be dynamically adjusted to a desired light quantity without being affected by external light and chromaticity and luminance of the backlight can be dynamically adjusted according to chromaticity information suitable for a video signal or chromaticity information desired by a viewing and listening person. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of sets of light sources each of which is constituted of three LEDs each emitting each primary color light of red, green and blue are disposed in an LED backlight panel 15. A correction chromaticity/luminance arithmetic processor 13 generates an LED controlling signal on the basis of external light chromaticity data from an external chromaticity detecting part 11 and external luminance data from an external luminance detecting part 12 and outputs the LED controlling signal through an LED controlling part 14 to drive the LEDs of the LED backlight panel 15 and make them emit light.
