PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal pretilt angle imparting agent for a liquid crystal alignment film, the agent capable of controlling the tilt angle of a liquid crystal to a desired angle without rubbing by irradiating with light. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal pretilt angle imparting agent for an optical alignment film is expressed by general formula (1). In formula (1), R<SP>1</SP>represents a carboxyl group, sulfo group, nitro group, amino group or hydroxyl group; X<SP>1</SP>represents a linking group expressed by -(A<SP>1</SP>-B<SP>1</SP>)<SB>m1</SB>-; X<SP>2</SP>represents a linking group expressed by -(A<SP>2</SP>-B<SP>2</SP>)<SB>n1</SB>-, wherein each of A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>independently represents a single bond, each of B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>independently represents a single bond and each of m1 and n1 independently represents an integer 0 to 4; each of D<SP>1</SP>and D<SP>2</SP>independently represents a benzene ring or a naphthalene ring which may have a substituent; R<SP>2</SP>represents a 6-18C alkyl group; and S represents an integer 1 to 3.
