PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and reliably control light in accordance with the purpose by electric control without using a polarizer such as a polarizing plate, therefore, without employing a mechanical structure such that a polarizer can be inserted in and retracted from the optical path of incident light. SOLUTION: A first GH (guest-host) liquid crystal cell 10 and a second GH liquid crystal cell 20 are arranged at the entrance side of external light of an imaging device 3. The first GH liquid crystal cell 10 and the second liquid crystal cell 20 are formed or disposed so that directions of the polarization axes in a polarizing mode (absorption mode) are made orthogonal to each other. When the light quantity entering the imaging device 3 is decreased or when an object producing intense reflected light or scattered light is to be imaged, either the first GH liquid crystal cell 10 or the second GH liquid crystal cell 20 or both of them are controlled to be in a polarization mode.
