The needle bar has a base body (1) of a carbon reinforced plastics material and a metal slit rail (2), with transverse reception grooves (6) for the ends of the needles (3), having a bearing surface (7) attached to the base body. The material thickness (d) of metal slit rail between the bases of the reception grooves and the bearing surface is selected for preventing a variation in the length of the slit rail due to thermal expansion during operation of the machine.
