PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a volumetric imaging system and method for clearly showing an anatomical structure and forming an image without causing geometrical strain, the volumetric imaging system and method for forming an image substantially with constant width extending all over the depth range. SOLUTION: A volumetric ultrasonic image is formed using a two-dimensional array transducer. The transducer forms a plurality of beams diverging in an elevation angle direction and scanning in the azimuth direction. In an embodiment, ultrasonic echoes in three beams equipped adjacent to each other in an elevation angle direction are projected in planes. A volumetric image is obtained by combining the projection planes of all three beams. A sector scanned by the transducer is divided by three beams.
