[Also in Group I] A soya seed product useful as an ingredient of composite feeding stuffs for cattle and poultry is prepared by rolling the soya seeds into elements having a thickness less than about 1 mm., and preferably between 0.5 and 1 mm., and cooking the elements obtained by steam at a temperature of between 90‹ and 110‹ C., for a time of from 2 to 50 minutes, according to the temperature and humidity of the elements, the humidity at the cooking stage being from 12% to 25%. In a preferred procedure the seeds are moistened prior to rolling and are rolled in the cold by passing them first between grooved rollers and subsequently between smooth rollers ; the product produced by the cooking is dried by subjecting it to vacuum or hot air, or on hot walls of a trickle drier, and is then cooled. Apparatus for the cooking consists of a heat-insulated container 1 provided with a false bottom 2, such as of wire gauze, through which steam flows from an orifice 5 to an outlet 6; the container also has charging and withdrawal doors 3, 4, respectively, and agitator arms 8 which rotate at a low speed e.g. 7.5 r.p.m. According to an example disclosed, the cooking is to be carried out either in the container 1 or, alternatively, in a screw-type apparatus. Feed formulations also are given. |
