PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a simple and inexpensive arsenic measuring method suitable for field analysis as well, since arsenic present in environmental water is a cause for producing high health hazard. SOLUTION: After molybdic acid ions and an oxidizing agent are added to a sample solution, containing a specimen under strong acid into reaction with arsenic (V), a cationic pigment ethyl violet solution is added, to form an aggregate of stable blue ions. Since only free ethyl violet turns into a colorless carbinol structure with the progress of the addition of protons, even a trace amount of arsenic of ppb levels can be detected in water visually or through the use of a simple apparatus, without background effects.
