PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve smooth re-acceleration and start of a vehicle after the rotating speed of a primary pulley or a secondary pulley is a limiting detected value or lower. SOLUTION: A continuously variable transmission has the primary pulley, the secondary pulley, and a power transmission element mounted between these pulleys. A shift ratio is controlled by adjusting primary pressure to be supplied to an oil chamber of a primary cylinder provided in the primary pulley. When at least one of a primary rotating speed and a secondary rotating speed is a rotation limiting value or lower detected by a sensor and it is no longer detected, the computation of the shift ratio is stopped and the primary pressure is set to be lower than in normal control.
