A band saw (10) includes a protective device having at least one shock absorbing/reflecting member (30) for reducing stress concentrations. The at least one shock absorbing member (30) has a configuration adapted to follow an outer contour of at least a portion of the band saw (10). A mechanism (38,40) secures the at least one shock absorbing member (30) to the band saw (10).
