A metal halide lamp (1) comprises a discharge container (2) including a discharge space (2a) and a pair of sealing sections (2b). A discharge medium containing a metal halide and a rare gas and essentially free from mercury is sealed in the discharge container (2). A pair of electrodes (3) are arranged to face each other within the discharge space (2a), and the side edge portions on the side of the proximal end portion of these electrodes (3) are held by the sealing sections (2b). The amount of water contained in the light-emitting material (6) is limited to 50 ppm or less.
