Disclosed is a method of treating a pathological condition in a non-human mammal associated with an excess of a trivalent metal, ion of compound there of comprising administering to the animal a compound of the formulas I-VI, wherein: R may be H or acyl; R1, R2, R3, R4 and R7 may be the same or different and represent H, alkyl or hydrocarbyl arylalkyl having up to 14 carbon atoms, or ûCH2-[O-(Ch2)x]y-OCH3, wherein x is 1-10 and y is 0-10; R5 is H, alkyl having up to 15 carbon atoms, ûCH2)1-2-[O-(Ch2)x]y-OCH3, wherein x is 1-10 and y is 0-10, or ûCH2-NOH-CO-[(Ch2)z-NOH-CO]q-R1, wherein R1 is as defined above, z is 1-10 and q is 0-5; R6 is H or acyl; n is 0-10; or a salt thereof with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable complex thereof.
