A screw-on throw-away oil filter comprises a cylindrical metal casing 10, a filter cartridge therein, a thin metal closure member 14 having a central opening with a plurality of oil inlet ports 28a therearound, and a threaded boss 25 secured to the member 14 for screwing the filter on to an engine block 28. The member 14 forms a pressure-compensating diaphragm spring and comprises radial corrugations, one of which, 19, forms a seal, through a gasket 32, with the engine block. The filter cartridge consists of an annular resin impregnated pleated paper element 12 with end caps 13 and a central perforated tube 41, and is supported on the lip of an annular support member 33 which is mounted on the boss 25 and has oil by-pass ports 37. A circular by-pass valve disc 38 provided with a rubber gasket 42 is seated on the member 33 by a spring 39 and has a central opening for the stem 44 of an anti-drainback valve 45, which closes oil outlet ports 46 in the disc under the action of a spring 47. In operation the pressure of the filtered oil opens the valve 45 and oil returns to the engine through a passage 31. Specification 796,475 is referred to. |
