摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of improving original reading efficiency, by reducing useless reading operation of an original image generated due to shortage of residual capacity of an image memory, while both side images of a plurality of originals are continuously read and stored in the image memory. SOLUTION: A composite machine is provided with an original reading mechanism 13 for reading the front surface image of an original transferred along a transfer path, and an image sensor 29 for reading the rear surface image in the same way. Also, the composite machine is provided with an image memory for storing image data of the front and rear surfaces of the read original. The composite machine is further provided with a control device for monitoring the memory capacity of the image memory during reading the original. When the residual capacity of the image memory becomes lower than a first predetermined value during reading the original image, the control device stops storing of the image data of the rear surface of the original into the image memory, deletes the image data of the rear surface of the original which have been stored in the image memory by then, and allows the image data read from the front surface of the original to be stored.
