An apparatus (10) for analyzing a plurality of samples in sample sites (28) on a substrate (20), the apparatus having an array of spaced apart light sources (12) coupled to a moveable support (14) so that one or more of the light sources (12) can be selectively used; a frame (22) for supporting the substrate (20); a detector (24, 26) configured to detect light; an optical relay (16) configured to transmit light from at least one of the plurality of light sources to a sample site and from the sample site to the detector; and a support structure (27) for supporting the frame (22), the detector (24, 26) and the optical relay (16).
