PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a possibility of applying excessive load to an actuator, if a target compression ratio is transiently changed to a increase direction during acceleration of an engine. SOLUTION: A reference target compression ratio is set based on an engine operational status, a final target compression ratio is set based on the reference target compression ratio, and an engine compression ratio is controlled toward the final target compression ratio. If the determination is made to be in a state where an actual compression ratio cannot well follow the basic target compression ratio (T1), the change to the increase direction of the final target compression ratio (ΔT2) is prohibited.
