PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating engine compactly formed and suitable for the compressor of a vehicle air conditioner, and operable at high pressures and high rotational speeds. SOLUTION: This reciprocating engine 1 comprises radial piston-cylinder units 2 and 3 annularly arranged parallel with each other. The outside stroke of a piston 2 is controlled by the cam 11 of a common eccentric shaft 2, and the inside stroke is controlled by a control ring 16. The control ring 16 is engaged with the side recessed part 17 of each piston extending in the direction of a split line and suitable for the cross sectional shape of the control ring 16. The recessed part 17 is bordered by the base part wall body of the piston 2, and the control ring 16 comes into slidable contact with the base part wall body through an inside control surface 20 when the control ring 16 is controlled.
